Hampshire Macmillan Citizens Advice Service
This service provides a dedicated advice service for people affected by cancer who are resident in or being treated in Hampshire, including Southampton, Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight. We are a team of caseworkers who provide specialist advice and casework face-to-face as well as through a telephone helpline and via email/letters.
Our team work very closely with professional staff at our outreaches in the many hospitals and hospices throughout Hampshire. We can be easily found in the Macmillan Centres inside the hospitals for an appointment or drop-in. In addition, we are able to see clients in their own homes or at one of our many outreach locations.
Our dedicated team can offer free, impartial, and confidential information and advice on a range of issues including:
- Help with welfare benefit applications and appeals
- Help with money matters
- Employment issues
- Housing issues
- Accessing charitable grants and one-off payments
- Travel to/from appointment
We would like to thank Macmillan Cancer Support for funding this vital Service.

Case Study
George, aged 81yrs, lived 72-mile round trip away from treatment at Queen Alexandra Hospital (QAH) in Portsmouth. George was unable to fund the fuel and parking costs to attend his treatment.
He visited our Macmillan Citizens Advice caseworker at the Macmillan Information Centre QAH. The Caseworker was able to apply for a Macmillan grant. George was very thankful to be able to afford the petrol to continue his treatment, and to be able to ask friends/family to drive him when exhausted as he could reimburse the cost.
George was able to keep up with his treatment and is cured. George’s story may have been very different if he didn’t receive the financial help he needed. This is an example of one of the challenges faced to deliver cancer services – getting people to attend treatments.
Email from George:
‘I came to see you in the Macmillan Centre in the Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth, after experiencing financial difficulties travelling five days a week to the Hospital to have radiotherapy treatment for laryngeal cancer. I would like to say a very sincere thank you to Macmillan, and to you, for helping me to be able to afford the petrol to drive myself to Portsmouth, and, towards the end of my treatment, when I felt too tired to drive myself safely, I could then ask friends and family to help me, and be able to reimburse their costs, which, at a round trip of 72 miles was something I didn’t feel I could ask them to bear. It may be early days yet, but I have every hope that my brilliant team of doctors and nurses have cured my cancer, but I also expect to return to QA from time to time for scans or talk to my doctors, but my main treatment has now finished. Needless to say, I am so grateful for the kindness and help I have received from everyone. Thank you’
